Under the project "Strengthening resilience to climate change, changing environment and promoting sustainable energy use in the Mekong Delta", in June 2019, WARECOD organized a workshop "Community and environment" in Dong Hai commune, Duyen Hai district, Tra Vinh province.
65 participants participated in the workshop, including the Women's Union of Long Phu District, Soc Trang Province, 15 provincial and district officials, communication officers and people in Muoi Chien hamlet, Long Phu commune; Vice Chairman of Dong Hai Commune People's Committee, Women's Union and community communicators in Con Cu and Dong Thanh (Dong Hai commune, Duyen Hai and Tra Vinh districts).
Community groups from two provinces presented research results and activities of environmental protection and water management monitoring in Con Cu, Dong Thanh hamlets, Dong Hai commune, Duyen Hai district (Tra Vinh), and Ap Muoi Chien , Nuoc Man 1 and Nuoc Man 2, Long Phu Commune and Hamlet No. 1, Long Phu Town, Long Phu District (Soc Trang).
The communication results report is presented through the performance of 02 communication skits "For the green environment" (Tra Vinh) and "Awareness first of all" (Soc Trang) combining Q&A related to the role of the local community. The skits made the seminar have an exciting, fun atmosphere and attracted the attention of the participant, delegates and local people.
In addition, delegates were allowed to see a set of pictures and listen to a presentation of pictures taken by community members of Con Cu and Dong Thanh. Community groups introduced agricultural production models and dust pollution from thermal power plants to Dong Hai commune.
At the end of the workshop, Dr. Tran Van Ha - Senior Researcher, Founding Member of WARECOD highly appreciated some initial results of the Community of Soc Trang and Tra Vinh Provinces. They have made great efforts in coordinating to implement project activities in 02 project communes of Long Phu and Dong Hai. This was clearly shown in the seminar activities, creating a useful place for members to participate in community communication activities on environmental protection and water management in two localities. Everyone has the opportunity to exchange and learn from each other. At the same time, he also proposed effective measures to help each other have a way to recognize, evaluate and connect the communication activities with each other. He suggested that on the basis of promoting the achieved results, it will gradually expand the model of environmental protection and water management as a basis to further attract local participation in the context of Climate change.
This is one of the key activities that contribute to the spread of outstanding results achieved since 2018, and improve the local capacity in environmental protection and water management as the project's goal. In the coming time, the local communities of Soc Trang and Tra Vinh provinces will continue to promote the more active participation of women officials and people who have initiatives to protect the environment and manage water resources in local.
