Training on "Developing socio-economic scenarios to adapt to Climate Change and Environmental Change" contributing to improving community capacity of Long Phu District - Soc Trang Province

From April 2 to 5, 2019, at Long Phu District People's Committee, the Women's Union of Soc Trang province and the Center for Water Resources Conservation and Development (WARECOD) and Long Phu District People's Committee organized a training course " Developing socio-economic scenarios to adapt to Climate Change and Environment Change ”for 25 officials and representatives of Long Phu district unions
The purpose of the training course is to step by step strengthen cooperation with the People's Committee of Long Phu district - Soc Trang province to develop a socio-economic development plan in the context of climate change and environmental change. Thereby, contributing to raising local awareness and attracting the participation of stakeholders in reducing environmental impacts and climate change adaptation.
During 03 days of training, Assoc.Prof. Dr. Le Anh Tuan - Vice Director of Climate Change Research Institute - Can Tho University and Ms. Nguyen Thi Ngoc Lan - Director of Center for Water Resources Conservation and Development (WARECOD) has assisted participants knowledge of climate change such as causes, impacts on social life on a global scale, the Mekong Delta region and Soc Trang province in particular. In addition, trainees also learned about skills, methods and techniques in developing socio-economic scenarios to adapt to climate change in their localities.
Through group discussion, access to information, participants have experienced some practical skills of collecting and analyzing information and data. From there, it is possible to assess the characteristics of the situation and identify socio-economic dynamics to develop a scenario that closely matches the characteristics of the district situation. Most of the participants chose areas of strength, mainly Agriculture; Industry and Services, to develop the district's socio-economic development climate change adaptation scenario.
Initial results, 90% of participants have grasped the basic issues, improved their knowledge, methods and skills. This result contributes to the district officer's capacity building on the development of socio-economic development scenarios and plans in the current climate change context.
According to Mr. Vuong Tan Vu - Vice Chairman of Long Phu District People's Committee, he highly appreciated the timely support of stakeholders, especially the Center for Water Resources Conservation and Development (WARECOD) in contributing capacity building for local community. As a result, it is possible to timely set up climate change response measures currently and having an impact on the district area; At the same time, it is recommended to focus on analyzing, reviewing and evaluating in more detail, paying attention to selecting key locations and models suitable for each commune and town so that soon there is a complete scenario.
